Because India Comes First
The essays in Because India Comes First discuss a range of issues that are at the heart of contemporary debates in India: democracy as the responsibility of the head of state, rule of law, peace and public order, Mahatma Gandhi and Gandhism, Ambedkar’s ideals, empowerment of women, Indian judiciary, the Ram Janmabhoomi case, abrogation of Article 370, the legacies of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Arun Jaitley, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s learnings in governance. This book also delves into the decisions made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government over the last few years, diplomatic relations with India’s neighbours and the confrontations with China. Madhav analyses India’s history of policymaking and asserts that, going ahead, it must put India first. He calls out liberal fascism, deconstructs our understanding of terrorism in India, argues that opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is intellectually dishonest, explores how learnings from Black Lives Matter can be applied in the Indian sphere and explains why protests should be rooted in Martin Luther King Jr’s non-violent approach and not anarchy. These essays weave a broad tapestry of India’s growth into a soft power, and predict how it will shape up over the next few decades. A must-read for those who believe in the new idea of India, and for those who accept that there are two sides to every debate.

The Musical Maverick
This is the first and only definitive authorized biography of a talent that emerges once a century— Shankar Mahadevan. Extensively researched and packed with endearing incidents and enduring accounts from the life of an artist who has been hailed as one of the greatest of all time. This biography captures Shankar at his most multifaceted: singer, musician, composer, friend, family man, guru and, ultimately, iconic artist and man beloved by millions. Drawing on many hundred hours of interviews with Shankar, this authorized biography paints the complete picture of a man who effortlessly glides into each of his facets with the same amount of passion and energy. Despite the fame and accolades, Shankar Mahadevan still identifies as a regular boy from Mumbai’s Chembur. His is a heartwarming tale of down-to-earth humanity, so typical of Mumbai. The candour and honesty with which Shankar narrates his journey is extremely rare for a man of his stardom. In The Musical Maverick, Shankar reveals that he trained to become a veena artiste in his childhood. While teaching him to play a kriti, his veena guru told him to also sing it in order to execute it well, thereby setting off his interest in singing. This eventually led to the formation of the legendary composer-trio: Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. His singing career was no less spectacular, with songs like ‘Suno Gaur Sey Duniya Walo’, still a must at almost every event of national importance— sporting, cultural or otherwise. With a raga of everlasting friendship; sweet notes of an adorable childhood romance; and the drumroll for the success story of the boy who won the world with his music, this saga will leave you breathless.

Great British Adventurers
In selecting my adventurers, I have had to find limits. The first has been to confine my selection to men and women who are (at least loosely) British and, even then, service and adoption have sometimes, as with Krystyna Skarbeka, taken the place of birth, and I have chosen to ignore such things as competing national claims for Tenzing Norgay. The second limit that I have set myself is generally to exclude heroic adventurers in battle, simply because there is (rightly), so much already written about them, but I have found place for certain (representative) secret agents of the Second World War, whose acts (in voluntary service, beyond the call of simple duty), surely took them out of the arena of straightforward battle and into the realm of the most individual and courageous adventure. The result of these decisions remains to be judged but the overall objective has been to renew interest in the lives of some of our real heroes and heroines, as representative of the many others that there are; in an age in which contemporary sporting and pop art heroes dominate the news and provide the only readily evident inspiration, and also an age in which addiction to the computer screen nearly robs the young of memories and dreams of high adventure; of which ripping yarns are born. The third limit is a limit of time: this speaks for itself; otherwise how would Drake and Raleigh, Clive of India, General Woolf and Captain Cook not have found their places? There have to be such limits. The final limit has been to exclude those who are widely famed already: what more is there to say of General Gordon or Dr David Livingstone of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Captain Laurence Oates; even though what has been said should often be repeated? Moreover, although Sir Edmund Hillary is acknowledged as the first conqueror of Mount Everest; Tenzing Norgay was there with him and what of George Mallory who, some time before had died, either going up or coming down?To those who might accuse me of having been obscure, I just plead that my purpose has been to bring back into ready remembrance certain men and women, not widely fted now, who had great impact upon the accrual of knowledge of: other peoples, their customs and their countries; or who have striven, often against various obstacles (including the odds), to promote exploration and, sometimes, even to preserve life and liberty for others. To the erudite, who might say that I shed little new light and that the coverage is uneven, I plead, in mitigation of sentence, that my principal purpose has been to remind of worthy lives that might still stir our blood; and to bring them together, as representative of our adventurous people, in one handy volume. The 80/20 Principle
With a simple observation that in his garden, 80 percent of the peas were borne by 20 percent of the pods, Vilfredo Pareto created a revolutionary principle. Known as the Pareto's principle or the rule of 80-20, the core of this principle lies in the fact, that 80 percent of the results which one receives in a field of activity is a result of 20 percent of the efforts. In case of business, merely 20 percent of the customers help in generating 80 percent of the revenue. This principle is developed and presented in a systematic way by Richard Koch. He not only explains the intricacies of the principle but also goes a step ahead by explaining the reasons that make this principle work. It is a secret used by highly successful people, which is made known to the common man through this book. RHUS published the reprint edition of The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Achieving More with Less; Reprint edition in 1999.
