    Spies In The Himalayas

    Kenneth Conboy M.S.Kohli

In the towering mountains of northern India, a chilling chapter was written in the history of international espionage. After the Chinese detonated their first nuclear test in 1964, America and India, which had just fought a border war with its northern neighbour, were both concerned. The CIA knew it needed more information on China's growing nuclear capability but had few ways of peeking behind the ""Bamboo Curtain"". Because of the extreme remoteness of Chinese testing grounds, conventional surveillance in this pre-satellite era was next to impossible. The solution to this intelligence dilemma was a joint American-Indian effort to plant a nuclear-powered sensing device on a high Himalayan peak in order to listen into China and monitor its missile launches. It was not a job that could be carried out by career spies, requiring instead the special skills possessed only by accomplished mountaineers. For this mission, cloaks and daggers were to be replaced by crampons and ice axes. This text chronicles the details of these death-defying expeditions sanctioned by US and Indian intelligence, telling the story of clandestine climbs and hair-raising exploits. Led by Indian mountaineer Mohan S. Kohli, conqueror of Everest, the mission was beset by hazardous climbs, weather delays, aborted attempts and even missing radioactive materials that may or may not still pose a contamination threat to Indian rivers. Kept under wraps for over a decade, these operations came to light in 1978 and have been long rumoured among mountaineers. ""Spies in the Himalayas"" provides an inside look at a CIA mission from participants who weren't agency employees, drawing on diaries from several of the climbers to offer impressions not usually recorded in covert operations. A host of photographs and maps puts readers on the slopes as the team attempts repeatedly to plant the sensor on a Himalayan summit.

The Invisible Enemy : A Global Story of Biological

    Girish Kuber

A translation of Girish Kuber's Yuddha Jivanche, this book explores the history of biological and chemical warfare and weapons development. It takes the reader on a rollercoaster journey from historical times to the present. The Invisible Enemy opens our eyes to how multinational companies and developed nations are working to create some of the most dangerous viruses and biological weapons which can destroy humanity. Chemical and pharma companies have also been the producers of weapons of mass destruction and benefitted from it-be it BASF which produced chemical weapons in World War I, or ICI, the British chemical company which produced a chemical causing blindness. Sandoz, another company, produced LSD, which was part of a chemical warfare project. The British used opium to create drug addicts in the Afghan war. The Invisible Enemy is a timely reminder, and hopefully a wake-up call, to humankind that is fast hurtling towards its own destruction.

    Mistaken Identity

    Nayantara Sahgal

On a train journey home to north India after long months of travel abroad, the playboy Bhushan Singh, son of the Raja of Vijaygarh, is arrested and thrown into jail. Charged with treason, Bhushan finds himself in a filthy prison cell surrounded by elderly trade unionists as innocent of any political crime and a jittery government sees sedition under every stone. As they wait for the trial that never seems to come, Bhushan takes up the role of Scheherazade, enthralling his cellmates with stories from his colourful past. He tells them of his boyhood affair with a beautiful Muslim girl that sparked off two murderous riots and led to his banishment abroad. He tells them of his life in the America of the Roaring twenties, of basking beside a turquoise swimming pool, learning the Turkey Trot and turning down the chance of a career as a movie star. Full of mystery and gentle humour, Mistaken Identity is a story of love and obsession that brilliantly summons up the turmoil of India in the twilight years of empire.

    A World Without War

    Sandeep Waslekar

In this powerful and thought-provoking book, thought leader Sundeep Waslekar examines the history of war and offers a solution for achieving world peace and global progress by exiting the arms race threatening human existence. The invention of dangerous weapons, missiles and killer robots alongside the rise of nationalism and intolerance of others makes human beings more vulnerable today than ever before. We may survive terrorist attacks, climate change and pandemics, but humankind cannot survive a global war that uses nuclear weapons. The threat of a nuclear war may seem distant to many, but the truth is that in many countries a single leader or a small group of leaders has the power to set off a nuclear attack. The risk of a war is very real, and has the potential to end human civilization. In A World without War, like other bestselling narratives in the past, Waslekar studies the history and politics of war, but goes one step further in offering a global social contract that can help achieve peace. Drawing from comprehensive research in politics, technology, philosophy and history, and writing in a convincing, non-academic narrative voice, Waslekar studies the origins of war and weaponry, the ever-present danger of nuclear weapons and the link between nationalism and war, ultimately arguing that war is a choice and that world peace is essential for human beings to recognize their true potential.
