Beyond Horizons-Around The World In A Sailing Boat
In 1987, thirty-seven-footer Trishna, crewed by army officers, became the first Indian boat to circumnavigate the globe. They braved rogue waves sweeping away life-saving equipment, sailed through pods of whales frolicking perilously close, survived the worst storm to have hit Sydney in nearly a century, taking over fifteen months and covering over fifty thousand kilometers. Major A. K. Singh, one of the members of this historic crew, vibrantly describes the epic voyage. His impressions of training at the National Defence Academy in Pune by men of integrity, who shaped his values in life, are humorous and sardonic. Later, as an army officer, he planned a sail around the world in a sailing boat. Fate struck-his leg was tragically amputated consequent to a hang gliding crash. Could he still sail round the world? Did he still want to? Disclosing the making of the Indian army officer with anecdotes and real-life examples of his comrades, several of whom have since lost their lives in valiant action, A. K. dwells upon the richness of life, irrespective of tribulations and disabilities. Living it right for him is larger than the record he sets inadvertently-becoming the first physically handicapped person to sail around the world in a yacht. Beyond Horizons describes a rousing adventure and is a humbling yet inspiring tribute to the indomitable human spirit. About the Author Major Ashok Kumar Singh is the first physically handicapped yachtsman to sail around the world in a yacht. He was awarded The Presidents Gold Medal at the NDA and The Sword of Honour as well as the Presidents Gold Medal at the IMA. He has been decorated with the Kirti Chakra and the Sena Medal for gallantry by the army and the President of Indias Tenzing Norgay National Award for adventure.

Digital DNA:Social Networking and You
Written in simple, jargon-free language with useful tips and guides, Digital DNA will help you navigate the online world without giving away more than you need to. Social networking, be it Facebook, Twitter or any other site is an essential part of our lives today. Most of us spend a significant amount of time posting photographs, status updates and articles, commenting on others posts and making new connections on social networking sites. Every time we do any of these, we create a narb, a narrative bit, about ourselves. Thus we leave our digital prints or digital DNA all over the virtual world, which when collated, can reveal more about us than we would like. Digital DNA talks about how to manage these narbs and filter the information we send out, so as to secure ones privacy while remaining active on social networks. Using examples from everyday life, Ananda Mitra explains what is a narb, what are the different types of narbs - text, picture, sound, video and how to ensure that our narbs do not fall into the wrong hands. About the Author Ananda Mitra has taught at Wake Forest University for over twenty years and is an international scholar on the societal impact of new media technologies. Strangely Beloved:Writings on Calcutta
Calcuttas wealth is not in ancient monuments, medieval courtrooms or modern skyscrapers. It is in its stories. Perhaps no city in India has inspired the responses of love and disgust as sharply as Calcutta, now Kolkata, where the old and the new, the beautiful and the squalid coexist side by side. Once a global city second only to London, it has often been written off as a dying city. But despite - perhaps because of - all its problems, Calcuttans love the city with the illogical passion of true love. In his 1971 book on the city, Geoffrey Moor house wondered why Calcutta is so strangely beloved. This collection of writings brings out the essence of the attractions this city has to offer - its food, music, theatre, art, politics - by weaving together history and personal experience, social commentary and political critique. Sharing the experiences of renowned writers and poets, academics and historians, who have all loved the life of this city, Strangely Beloved provides a rare and heart-warming glimpse into the heart, mind and soul of one of the greatest cities in the world. Interesting Facts Thoughtfully compiled and divided into thematic sections for easy reference, Strangely Beloved is the first comprehensive collection of writings about Calcutta, bringing together writings by academics and historians as well as literary stalwarts like Sunil Gangopadhyay. Strangely Beloved touches upon a diverse range of subjects - from the convergence of tradition and modernity in the city to the passion Calcuttans share for music, theatre and food from the citys controversial economic policies to anecdotes about growing up in the city - providing an accurate appraisal of the unique spirit of the city. In Strangely Beloved, rare, archival photographs of Calcutta are combined with modern street photography to give readers an experience that is as much visual as it is literary. Beautifully designed for the contemporary reader, this book is a collectors edition that will delight all lovers of good writing, whether theyre from Calcutta or otherwise.
