    Gaata Rahe Mera Dil

    Anirudha Bhattacharjee Balaji Vittal

Look behind the scenes of fifty celebrated songs, from an estimated repository of over one lakh! 'De de khuda ke naam pe' - When Wazir Mohammed Khan sang these words in India's first talkie, Alam Ara, he gave birth to a whole new industry of composers, lyricists and singers, as well as an entirely new genre of film-making that is quintessentially Indian: the song-and-dance film. In the eight decades and more since then, Hindi film songs have enraptured listeners all over the world. From 'Babul mora, naihar chhooto jaye' (Street Singer, 1938) to 'Dil hai chhota sa' (Roja, 1992), from the classical strains of 'Ketaki gulab' (Basant Bahar, 1956) featuring Bhimsen Joshi to the disco beats of Nazia Hassan's 'Aap jaisa koi' (Qurbani, 1981), from the pathos of 'Waqt ne kiya' (Kaagaz Ke Phool, 1959) to the exuberance of the back-to-back numbers in Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977), here is an extraordinary compilation, peppered with trivia, anecdotes and, of course, the sheer joy of music. Find out answers to questions like - With which unreleased film did Kishore Kumar turn composer? In which song picturization was dry ice first used? Which all-time classic musical was initially titled Full Boots? Where was the title song of An Evening in Paris shot? The idea for which song originated when the film-maker visited Tiffany's in London? Which major musical partnership resulted from the celebrations around an award function for a commercial jingle for Leo Coffee? How many of your favourites find mention here? Make your own list!

    Unfinished Tales

    J.R.R.Tolkien

Published posthumously by Tolkien's youngest son, The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle Earth tells the stories of how Gandalf found Bilbo and how he decided to send the Dwarves of Erebor to him. It also tells the story of Aldarion and Erendis, one of the most moving love stories to be found in Tolkien's fantasy setting. Illuminating on subjects hitherto untouched such as the identities of the five Istari who would later be known as Wizards, the Palantiri and their making, the legend of Amroth and the coming of the sea god Ulmo before Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, this is a collection any Tolkien fan would not want to miss.

    Romance

    Me, Mia, Multiple

    Debashish Irengbam

Killing yourself should be easy, right? Pop a few sleeping pills, lie on a railway track and let the train do the rest of the work. Neat, swift, painless. Yet dramatic. What could possibly go wrong with Jeevan Raikar's plan? Well, this - a girls' night out happening at the graveyard next door, starring a vodka-swilling blackmailer and her dead mother. And so, Jeevan - who ought to be dead by now, mind you - is stuck with bubbly Mia, raging Tanya and sensuous Alisha. Which might seem like an enviable situation to be in, but for one tiny catch. They are all the same person. Me, Mia, Multiple is a debut that cares little for convention - a romance with a twist, a twisted romance, a romantic twister. Whatever you want to call it, you'll tear through it with sheer pleasure.

    There's Something About You

    Yashodhara Lal

This is not your typical boy-meets-girl story. Okay, they do meet, but there are some complications. Trish is twenty-eight. She's unemployed, overweight, single and snarky. She knows all that. And if one more person - just one more person - tries to fix her, she might explode. Sahil is thirty-five. He has superpowers. Well, kind of. He seems to think so, anyway. He's also hot (in a geeky kind of way, but still). And he plays the guitar, helps the underprivileged and talks about his feelings. Aren't guys like that supposed to exist only in fantasies? When Trish and Sahil meet, magic happens. Real magic, you know, like fireworks, electricity, that sort of thing. But here's the problem. Trish doesn't want anyone in her life. She has enough to deal with - dependent parents, flaky neighbours, bitchy editors, the works. And yet, Sahil is determined to be in her life. From the bestselling author of Just Married, Please Excuse and Sorting Out Sid, here is another zinger of a book.

    Kashmir The Vajpayee Years

    Aditya Sinha A.S. Dulat

There comes a day in one's life when one feels it should all be put down before memory fades. There are endless memories and I have carried a story with me for a long time. SRINAGAR IN THE WINTER OF 1989 was an eerie ghost town witnessing the beginnings of a war dance. The dam burst the night boys from the separatist JKLF group were freed in exchange for the release of Rubaiya Sayeed, the Union home minister's daughter. As Farooq Abdullah had predicted, the government's caving in emboldened many Kashmiris into thinking that azaadi was possible. 'The price we will have to pay' were Farooq's prophetic words. Killings were almost a daily occurrence. Bomb explosions and firings occurred not far from the chief minister's residence in the most secure zone. Gun-toting youth in trucks were seen close to the cantonment. Kashmiris believed that they were on the verge of liberation. A.S. Dulat, who was posted there, saw Intelligence Bureau colleagues being picked off one by one. It was a long, slow haul to regaining control. From then to today, Dulat has had a continuous engagement with Kashmir. The initiatives launched by the Vajpayee government in power from 1998 to 2004 were the high point of this constant effort to keep balance in a delicate state. As Vajpayee said, Kashmir was a problem that had to be solved. In this extraordinary memoir that reads like a thriller, Dulat gives a sweeping account of the difficulties, successes and near triumphs in the effort to bring back Kashmir from the brink. He shows the players, the politics, the strategies and the true intent and sheer ruthlessness of the meddlers from across the border. Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years paints an unforgettable portrait of politics in India's most beautiful but troubled state.

    1984-The Anti-Sikh Violence And After

    Sanjay Suri

As a journalist with The Indian Express, Sanjay Suri experienced the horror of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence from close quarters. He was witness to a Congress MP demanding the release of partymen arrested for their involvement in the killings, he had a narrow escape from a politically instigated attack and he confronted several leaders from the party with hard facts and questions, including Kamal Nath and Rajiv Gandhi. He appeared before the commissions of inquiry to give evidence, but much of what he saw and knew got diluted and reduced to legalese. 1984 - A Reporter's Diary brings together specific and on-the-ground information based on his experiences and interviews, backed by an examination of records. It reviews the commissions of inquiry and the way they were conducted. At the heart of the narrative is a close, hard look at the question of the Congress's hand in the riots and an attempt to find out why the survivors continue to wait for justice even thirty years later.

    Light On Yoga

    B.K.S.Iyengar

Light On Yoga is a definitive guide about Yoga, a rigorous discipline for attaining physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is aimed at beginners as well as advanced practitioners of Yoga. The book begins a foreword by Yehudi Menhuin, a famous violinist and a friend of the author. It is divided into three parts. The first part contains an introduction to Yoga, tracing its historical origin to ancient India. The second part is dedicated to yogasanas, bandhas, and kriyas. It covers numerous asanas or poses in great detail. Each asana is illustrated by a photograph. This is followed by step-by-step instructions that will help with perfecting the asana. The benefits of each pose, the ailments it cures, and the precautions it requires are also included. The third part of the book is dedicated to the concept of Pranayama, a form of yogic breathing. It covers the technique of pranayama, its precautions, its effects, and its types. The book ends with two appendices. The first one provides the sequence in which the asanas are to be performed. The second appendix recommends specific asanas for targeting and curing specific diseases. Light On Yoga was first published in 1966. Since then, it has been considered to be a must-have for serious practitioners of Yoga. It has been translated into sixteen languages including German, Hebrew, Korean, and Italian. This particular edition is a 2004 reprint by Thorsons. It has been updated to bring a cleaner and more structured look to the original classic.

    More Than A Mouthful-Adventures Of A Dentist

    Dr. Sandesh Mayekar

We use our teeth every day to munch on an apple or carrot, to hold a pen-knife or a hairpin, we put them on display when we smile or laugh. But we rarely think about the strain we subject them to, rushing to the dentist only when our teeth cry out in pain. Or, sometimes, when they disturb the symmetry of our face. Teeth may get lost while shooting for a Bollywood fighting scene. They may shrink to half their size because of too much cola intake. A man may commit suicide because of the buzzing in his ears caused by a strained muscle in the jaw. Dr. Sandesh Mayekar has seen all this and worse. He has filled the dark cavity in a molar, fought smelly mouth odour, whitened a ladys gums for a beauty contest and sealed that wide gap between a mans front teeth for a photo shoot. More than a mouthful tells the stories behind those healthy teeth that you see on TV or on the ramp. Mayekar has stayed up nights, sometimes travelled miles, to address an emergency. He has assuaged patients fears with as much clinical care as personal concern. It is also the tale of one mans determination to master his craft and lay the foundation of aesthetic dentistry in India is a journey that has taken him from humble beginnings in a chawl in Mumbai to the swanky bandstand at Bandra. Written with compassion and laced with wit, more than a mouthful is what the doctor prescribes to rid you of that fear of the dentist.

    Farewell Kabul

    Christina Lamb

From the award-winning co-author of 'I Am Malala', this book asks just how the might of NATO, with 48 countries and 140,000 troops on the ground, failed to defeat a group of religious students and farmers? How did it go so wrong?Twenty-seven years ago, Christina Lamb left Britain to become a journalist in Pakistan. She crossed the Hindu Kush into Afghanistan with mujaheddin fighting the Russians and fell unequivocally in love with this fierce country of pomegranates and war, a relationship which has dominated her adult life. Since 2001, Lamb has watched with incredulity as the West fought a war with its hands tied, committed too little too late, failed to understand local dynamics and turned a blind eye as their Taliban enemy was helped by their ally Pakistan. Farewell Kabul tells how success was turned into defeat in the longest war fought by the United States in its history and by Britain since the Hundred Years War. It has been a fiasco which has left Afghanistan still one of the poorest nations on earth, the Taliban undefeated and nuclear armed Pakistan perhaps the most dangerous place on earth. With unparalleled access to all key decision-makers in Afghanistan, Pakistan, London and Washington, from heads of state and generals as well as soldiers on the ground, Farewell Kabul tells how this happened. In Afghanistan, Lamb has travelled far beyond Helmand - from the caves of Tora Bora in the south to the mountainous bad lands of Kunar in the east, from Herat, city of poets and minarets in the west, to the very poorest province of Samangan in the north. She went to Guantanamo, met Taliban in Quetta, visited jihadi camps in Pakistan and saw bin Laden's house just after he was killed. Saddest of all, she met women who had been made role models by the West and had then been shot, raped or forced to flee the country. This deeply personal book not only shows the human cost of political failure but explains how short-sighted encouragement of jihadis to fight the Russians, followed by prosecution of ill-thoughtout wars, has resulted in the spread of terrorism throughout the Islamic world.
