Anna: 13 Days That Awakened India

    Ashutosh

Anna Hazare's fast unto death in August 2011, demanding the enactment of strong Lokpal Bill, was a watershed moment in post-independence India. Coming soon after a slew of corruption exposes, the movement galvanized an increasingly disenchanted middle class nothing had in decades. Well-known Hindi journalist Ashutosh weaves together the story of the thirteen days that changed India. He had a ringside view of the developments, stationed as he was at the Ramlila Grounds in New Delhi, the venue of the fast, and had intimate access to the two warring parties: the Congress government at the Centre and Team Anna. Evoking the Jayaprakash Narayan movement and Gandhi's satyagraha, Ashutosh mines the history of India's post-independence politics to understand the phenomenon that is Anna Hazare. About The Author Ashutosh is one of Hindi journalism’s best-known faces. He started his career with Aaj Tak and is currently managing editor at IBN 7.

To Cut a Long Story Short.

    Jeffrey Archer

The latest short-story collection from the master storyteller. The fourteen - all new - stories show Jeffrey Archer's great skills with a wide variety of character, of subject and of setting, but all with that trademark twist in the tail. Every reader will have their own favourites: the choices run from love at first sight across the train tracks to the cleverest of confidence tricks, from the quirks of the legal profession - and those who are able to manipulate both sides of the bar - to the creative financial talents of a member of Her Majesty's diplomatic service - but for a good cause. The last story, 'The Grass is Always Greener', is possibly the best piece Archer has written, and will haunt you for the rest of your life.

    God’s Little Soldier

    Kiran Nagarkar

From the backstreets of Bombay to the hallowed halls of Cambridge, from the mountains of Afghanistan to a monastery in California, the story of Zia Khan is an extraordinary rollercoaster ride; a compelling cliffhanger of a spiritual quest, about a good man gone bad and the brutalization of his soul. Growing up in a well-to-do, cultured Muslim family in Bombay, Zia, a gifted young mathematician, is torn between the unquestioning certainties of his aunt’s faith and the tolerant, easy-going views of his parents. At Cambridge University, his beliefs crystallize into a fervent orthodoxy, which ultimately leads him to a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan. The burden of endemic violence and killings, however, takes its toll on Zia. Tormented by his need for forgiveness, he is then drawn reluctantly to Christ. But peace continues to elude him, and Zia is once again driven to seek out causes to defend and fight for, whatever be the sacrifices involved. Posited against Zia is his brother, Amanat, a writer whose life is severely constrained by sickness, even as his mind is liberated by doubt. Theirs is a relationship that is as much a blood bond as it is an opaque wall of incomprehension. Weaving together the narratives of the extremist and the liberal, God’s Little Soldier underscores the incoherent ambiguities of good and evil, and the tragic conflicts that have riven people and nations.

    Didi: A Political Biography

    Monobina Gupta

Mamata Banerjee is many things to many people – to some she is a ‘performer’ on the stage of Indian politics; to others she is a spirited woman who made it despite having no male patrons, a leader who was tested to the limit and emerged on top. If she is adored as the quintessential woman next door who has none of the airs that mark Indian politicians, she is as strongly derided for her ‘theatricality’ and rhetoric. But everyone agrees that she is a fighter who never gives up. Overcoming severe odds to challenge three decades of Marxist rule in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, ‘Didi’ to the young and old, came up trumps to become the first woman chief minister of West Bengal. But her real challenge begins now. Will she be able to end the culture of violence and regenerate West Bengal economically and politically? Will she be able to go beyond being a rabble-rouser to become a sagacious and visionary leader? Or will her party follow in the footsteps of the CPI(M), dragging the state deeper into the abyss it has fallen into? In Didi, Monobina Gupta brings her experience as journalist and commentator on politics in the state of West Bengal to paint a fascinating portrait of one of the most important political figures in India today.

Delirious Delhi: Inside India's Incredible Capital

    Dave Prager

Delhi exists in a kind of quantum state: in Delhi, all things are true at once. When the Big Apple no longer felt big enough, Dave and Jenny moved to a city of sixteen million people – and, seemingly, twice that many horns honking at once. Delirious Delhi depicts India s capital as the two experienced it, from office life in the rising tech hubs to the traffic jam philosophy that keeps people sane in the gridlock leading to them. With only their sense of humour as their guide, Dave and Jenny set out to explore a city in which ancient stone monuments compete with glass-clad shopping malls to define the landscape. What follows is a top-to-bottom snapshot of a city in the thick of loud and accelerating change. Anyone new to Delhi will have their understanding of it magnified by this book. And anyone who already knows Delhi will appreciate this candid tribute to a city that s everything to everyone at the same time. About The Author Dave Prager and his wife Jenny Steeves now reside in the US and have lived in New York City, London, Singapore, and New Delhi, where they co-curated the popular blog Our Delhi Struggle . Dave s writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Caravan, and Gulf Life magazine. This is his second book

    The Temple And The Mosque

    Rakhshanda Jalil Munshi Premchand

Premchand's fiction has been translated before, but seldom did these translations reveal the many facets of his literary genius, nor did they show the wide variety of 'types' he was capable of portraying. For, Premchand wrote not only about villains and martyrs, poverty, rigid social order or caste disparities. His world, seemingly black and white though it is, is also lit by flashes of wit and humour, gentle irony and a persistent social commentary. While Premchand's favourite characters – bhang-drinking pandits, miserable sweepers and arrogant Thakurs – do feature in this collection, this is perhaps the first time that the English reader will be introduced to his 'other' world – a world of unbelievably good men, lovesick young girls, and a penniless braggart's self-delusion. About the Author Premchand (1880–1936) is regarded as among the finest of writers in Hindi and Urdu. His first collection of stories, Soz-e-Watan (1908), was banned for being incendiary and seditious. Undaunted, he kept writing stories that expressed the pain and suffering of the toiling masses. Some of his best writings portray the influence of Gandhi and the Russian revolution in his choice of subjects: widow remarriage, dowry, untouchability, the rich–poor divide, the problems of landless labour, and the inequalities of the caste system. br>Rakhshanda Jalil is a writer, translator and editor. Her debut collection of short stories Release and Other Stories was published by HarperCollins in August 2011

    Wicked Women Of The Raj

    Coralie Younger

"Wicked Women Of The Raj is an unputdownable factual account of the zenana world of the rajas and sultans of India; concentrating on the firangi bahus and begums of this veiled world of myths and folklores. The book gives us the stories of twenty different European women who broke society's rules to marry the 'heathen' Indian princes. Who were these women? Were they gold-diggers; or hopeless romantics hoping to enact their own Cinderella fairytale? Did they live happily ever after? Set against the backdrop of India's independence struggle; the book has a delicious and potent mix of flavours - the end of the British Raj and the downfall of the pompous and extravagant Indian aristocracy."

    The Emperor Of All Maladies

    Siddhartha Mukherjee

In The Emperor of All Maladies, Siddhartha Mukherjee, doctor, researcher and award-winning science writer, examines cancer with a cellular biologist's precision, a historian's perspective, and a biographer's passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with - and perished from - for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience and perseverance, but also of hubris, arrogance and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out 'war against cancer' . Emperor of All Maladies is about the people who have soldiered through toxic, bruising, and draining regimes to survive and to increase the store of human knowledge. Riveting and magisterial, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments and a brilliant new perspective on the way doctors, scientists, philosophers and lay people have observed and understood the human body for millennia.
